NON-DUAL DEPOSSESSION

Indigenous peoples tend to have many beautiful, respectful rituals to honor the dead and they meet death as a natural, organic transition of great wonder and evolution of the spirit. In modern western culture however, we tend to view death as a failure in some way; as a source of great fear and aversion as well as a time of polarity where we are either rewarded for goodness or made to pay for transgressions or else dissolve into nothingness. We also have populations that experience some kind of trauma at death that isn’t resolved through a well-tended dying process and we have horrific wars, genocides and oppressions that destroy the lives of millions of all kinds of beings (human and otherwise) who receive no solace, recognition or honor. Hence we do not retain the sacred rituals that help the dead move on in complete, graceful ways. Due to this vacuum, there is a greater incidence of unbeneficial possession by disincarnate beings at this time.

Possession can occur when a deceased being doesn’t fully move on to Source to complete their journey and so remains in-between worlds, neither nourished by their living body and the Earth nor fully supported energetically by their divine Source. In order to maintain some sense of focus or for various other reasons, a soul might attach to the energy field of a living being or possibly a place. Although history and the media have made possession seem scary, unusual, a belief of the ignorant or superstitious, or the mark of an absolute malevolent presence, it is actually now fairly common. Most cases occur when someone dies in a painful or dissociated way, or in a way where there is a sense of confusion, fear, loss, and/or attachment to what is known. When this happens the effects can range from benign to malevolent--although even benign possessions usually become depleting in some way over time-- and might include the following:

  • A sense of feeling overshadowed in some way, or paralyzed by either fears or desires.

  • Mental chatter which the possessed person believes is their own mind-talk but is actually the possessing being’s interference

  • Addictions of all sorts, especially alcohol and drugs, especially ones that are very difficult to heal despite sincere attempts

  • Compulsive behaviors

  • Abusive relationship with self or others

  • Chronic pain and/or disease processes can sometimes be associated with this

  • Spontaneous sexual stimulation

  • Intimacy difficulties

  • Sudden changes in disposition, behaviors, appearance, moods.

Possession can occur and manifest in other forms of attachment and for different reasons/with different outcomes than expressed above, but these are the most common.

Non-dual depossession is based on the results of long-term experience that demonstrate it serves no good and is essentially unethical to merely banish or exorcise a spirit(benign or malevolent) from the energy field of its living host. To do so merely sends “the problem” to someone or somewhere else, and neglects the fact that any possessing spirit is originally sourced in the Divine and is part of the web of life, and is in as much need of assistance in re-membering their essence and “place” as the living being is in having the attached energy decoupled. In fact, those possessing spirits who behave with the greatest malevolence are usually those who experience the greatest loss of their sense of original power and are in extreme need of our understanding, compassion and assistance, however destructive their effect on the living may be.

To facilitate the compassionate process of non-dual depossession the practitioner must be able to hold both the living client as well as the possessing spirit, aka suffering being, in a place of absolute non-judgement and deepest compassion. In this stance a practitioner aligns with the appropriate Helping Spirits in a deeply resourced, protected energetic field and acts as a conduit for the Helping Spirits to first decouple the involved beings and then facilitate a successful transition for the deceased soul. Although the concept of possession disturbs many modern people in different ways, non-dual depossession is found by many practitioners to be one of the most inspiring, beautiful and moving things we ever do...it is a very needed way to help mend rifts in the web of life to the benefit of all.
